The problem we solve
Most marketing doesn’t fail in the execution. It fails in the brief.
The campaigns are fine. The creative is fine. What’s missing is the layer above them: the decision about what this organisation stands for, who it’s for, and what winning looks like.
“Every channel tells a slightly different story, and I can’t tell you which one is right.”
One position and one narrative, carried consistently by every team, every agency and every channel you run.
“We’re busy all year and I can’t point to what compounded.”
A sequenced roadmap where each quarter builds on the last, plus a short, deliberate list of what to leave alone.
“The reporting says a great deal and settles nothing.”
A measurement framework agreed before the work starts, so the numbers end arguments instead of starting them.
“Everyone pitches me tactics before they understand the business.”
A paid diagnostic first. Senior people, your data, your stakeholders, and only then a recommendation about spend.
What you walk away with
A plan your board will back. And your team can run on Monday.
A position you ownThe single, defensible place you hold in your audience’s mind, written in language your people already use out loud.
A narrative that scalesStory, message hierarchy and proof points that hold their shape across products, campaigns, tenders and job ads.
Audience clarity, evidencedWho actually buys, what frustrates them and what moves them, from interviews and market research rather than assumption.
A sequenced roadmapWhat happens in the next 90 days, what happens over the next two years, and what we deliberately leave out.
A measurement frameworkThe handful of numbers that matter, how each one is tracked, and what good looks like against a baseline we set together.
One brief every partner works fromSo creative, media, web and lifecycle stop solving the same problem four different ways.
Why Paradigm
The rigour of a consultancy. The craft of an agency.
You’ve almost certainly been handed a strategy before. A deck that read beautifully and changed nothing, because nobody who wrote it had to live with the result. The test of a strategy isn’t the document. It’s whether the next hundred decisions get easier.
Strategy firstWe sell the thinking, then the execution. Never the reverse.
Senior people on every engagementThe people in the pitch are the people on the work.
Transparent pricing, no media markupWe don’t clip a ticket on your spend.
You own your accounts and dataEvery platform, every dataset, in your name.
No lock-inStay because the work compounds, not because you’re stuck.
Built for AotearoaWorld-class craft made for New Zealand audiences and context.
Perception = Projection ×ParticipationHow you’re seen isn’t what you say about yourself. It’s what you project (proof, credibility, creative, tone) multiplied by how people get to participate. Multiplication, not addition: neglect either side and the whole result collapses. Strategy is where we engineer both on purpose.
Paradigm brings together three established Wellington practices under one accountable team: strategy, creative, media, platforms, data and lifecycle. We work with Crown agencies, councils and NGOs, with universities and arts organisations, with e-commerce and professional-services firms, from Wellington to Auckland, Christchurch and across the motu.
The plan
Three steps to a strategyyou’ll actually use.
01Book the auditA conversation with the people who’d do the work, not a business-development layer. We look at where you are, what you’ve already tried and where the leverage sits. No deck, no pitch.60 minutes, free
02We run ClarifyStakeholder interviews, audience and market research, competitive and category mapping, and a full audit of your brand, funnel and data. Your team is in the room throughout. This is a paid engagement, and it’s the part that makes everything after it cheaper.4–6 weeks

AmbitionFootball Central had the range, the community credibility and a loyal Wellington following, and an online store that behaved like a catalogue rather than a channel. The ambition was straightforward and hard: make e-commerce a real revenue line without diluting what the shop meant to local football.
ActionWe started with Clarify. Audience research separated the club buyer from the parent from the collector, and each turned out to want an entirely different thing from the same page. That reframed the whole plan: positioning first, then merchandising and category structure, then a measurement framework that made channel contribution legible for the first time. Only then did we touch the spend.
Achievement91.1% year-on-year revenue growth, with the strategy, not the tactics, doing the heavy lifting. The plan set the brief for the media, the creative and the store, and the same document is still the reference a year on.

What does a brand and marketing strategy engagement actually involve?
A brand and marketing strategy engagement is a structured diagnostic that decides three things before any money is spent on execution: what position the organisation will own, who it is for, and how success will be measured. At Paradigm it runs four to six weeks and is deliberately paid, because strategy given away free becomes a sales cost rather than the most valuable part of the work. It is also the layer most resistant to being automated away.
In practice, a New Zealand organisation running this with us gets stakeholder interviews across the leadership team, primary audience research, a competitive and category map of the local field, and a full audit of the existing brand, funnel and analytics stack, GA4 and Google Tag Manager included, because measurement problems are usually strategy problems wearing a disguise. The output is a positioning statement, a message architecture, a 90-day and two-year roadmap, and a measurement framework, all handed over in editable form.
We work with organisations from Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch and across the motu, in commerce and digital, community and public good, and professional services.
How long does a strategy engagement take?+
Four to six weeks from kickoff to handover for most organisations. Larger stakeholder groups, multi-brand structures or primary research at scale can extend it to eight. We scope the timeframe in the first conversation and hold it. A strategy that arrives after the budget round has closed isn’t a strategy.
Do we have to use Paradigm to execute the strategy?+
No. The plan is written to be executable by whoever holds it, and it’s handed over in editable form with your data and your accounts in your name. Plenty of clients run the first quarter with their existing partners and come back to us for specific pieces. Nothing in the engagement creates a dependency.
How is this different from a brand refresh?+
A brand refresh changes how an organisation looks. Strategy decides what it should stand for, who it’s for and how it will be measured, which is what makes a refresh worth doing. Identity work sits downstream in Brand & Creative, and it goes much faster when this has been done first.
Common questions
Straightanswers.
What does a strategy agency in New Zealand actually do?+
A strategy agency decides what an organisation should stand for, who it’s for and how growth will be measured, before any creative or media is produced. Paradigm runs this as a paid four-to-six-week diagnostic covering stakeholder interviews, audience research, competitive mapping and a brand, funnel and data audit. It produces a positioning, a narrative, a roadmap and a measurement framework the client owns outright.
How much does brand and marketing strategy cost in New Zealand?+
It’s scoped to the size of the stakeholder group and the depth of research required, and it’s quoted as a fixed project fee, not as a percentage of anything. We don’t price off media spend and we don’t clip a ticket on it, because that model quietly rewards an agency for recommending you spend more. You’ll have a firm number before the engagement starts.
Why do you charge for strategy when other agencies include it free?+
Because free strategy is a sales cost, and it gets treated like one. When the thinking is a loss-leader for the execution, it’s produced fast, produced junior, and shaped to justify the retainer that follows. Charging for it means senior people do it, your team is genuinely in the room, and the recommendation is honest about what you should and shouldn’t spend.
Can you work alongside our existing agencies?+
Yes, and it’s common. The strategy is written as a brief any partner can execute against, which is usually the point, because the problem it solves is four partners solving the same thing four different ways. Your accounts and data stay in your name throughout.
Do you work with government agencies and NGOs?+
Yes. Community and public good is one of our three sectors, alongside commerce and digital and professional services. That work carries different constraints: public accountability, procurement, behaviour-change objectives and messaging that has to withstand scrutiny. The strategy phase is where those get designed in rather than discovered late.
What if we already have a strategy?+
Then the audit is short and cheap, and we’ll say so. A fair number of organisations have a good strategy that never made it into the briefs, the measurement or the org chart. That’s an activation problem, not a strategy problem, and it’s a different, smaller piece of work. We’d rather tell you that in the first conversation than sell you the larger one.
